AM paranoia

Post by NightProwler »

I love AM but is anyone else paranoid about using this mode? I suppose it goes back to the days when AM would wipe out everything resulting in your voice coming over everything from the toaster to the kettle. I know we are in a digital world now which I am not a fan of but I still get worried using AM. Maybe im just paranoid. Anyone else feel like this?

The short answer to that is no.

The only time we ever had inteference complaints back in the day were when using legal 4w FM and at the time legal antennas such as Thunderpoles, Delta DX, Wot poles etc.

Which due to their inefficient loaded design were terrible for causing problems.

There is no such thing as a Fidelity 1000 which is too good to scrap.

In Poland AM is main modulation used. FM? Get out...
Some folks on SSB but small groups of local friends.
AM rules.

I prefer AM.
It's a much better hiss rather than that FM ear bashing crackle.

Used to love AM as when two stations keyed up you could usually tell what both said, where on FM you just get squeal.
I have a couple of 40ch am rigs and they sound really nice. I would throw one in the car but very little activity around here.

I can remember back around 1980 time when we went shopping and the wife went into the supermarket and I stayed outside chatting on my AM Midland rig .The wife came back to the car quicker than normal to tell me to stop chatting as everything I said was coming over the shops loudspeaker system lol.
If the problen cant be sorted with a "LUMP-HAMMER" then its most likely to be an Electrical fault

I had some funny moments when transmitting in AM.
Early 90's, ss3900 and 2xEL519 I was activating several car alarms on parking lot and burglary alarm in nearby store.
300m further in TV shop they heard me talking in TV set speakers.
Sunday morning fun was to drive close to church during Holy Mass and talk through church speakers.
My neighbour VCR was ejecting tape when I pressed PTT.
Talking through baby monitors, even now they use 27.125AM :)
Not so long time ago, when I had radio in my car I was activating bank alarms on my route when chatting with friends. Running half kilowatt into Predator 10k
