If it's the first time you've tried the airwaves then it may be quiet just because it's Christmas. Give it a week and try again over a weekend when it's likely to be busier.

What set- up are you using as a small aerial will only pick up a few miles?

You have to monitor for a few weeks to find out what times and freq people use. I had to when i set back up i thought it was dead but i stuck with it and now know what times people come on air.Plus Christmas day would be the worst day to turn radio on.

Also may I suggest rather than just listen make a few calls?

Actually there is often quite a lot of activity in the Shropshire / S. Cheshire area, but it is on channel 25 UK FM.
Best times are any time on Saturday and Sunday day times, but also random times in the week days and evenings.
It is largely due to a guy called Mike "Mr Moonraker" who has a very good set-up on top of "Mow Cop" and he generally is "in the chair" chatting to folk and passing them around.

Thanks everyone, I'm using a home brew 1/2 wave vertical and a couple of UK FM radios with just the legal power. I can hear some of the Black Country crew but I'm guessing their running high power. I have tried putting out calls but to no avail , I will have a listen on the days mentioned.
