Acom 1010 Amplifier Cooling Fan

Post by Auldgeek »

Afternoon all.

Looking for any owners of the above amplifier to advise me if they think the cooling fan noise is intrusive
I've recently purchased one, but I find the fan noise is annoying. I have very poor hearing above 1khz, but below that, it's reasonable. Unfortunately, that means I tend to become hyper sensitive to low frequencies and sudden changes in audibal tone.
While I'm measuring a dba of only 35, to me, the fan sounds as if the blades are unbalanced when spinning and that is producing what I can only describe as a droning sound.

I've searched around the web and while there's some comments on the fan noise, nobody has called it out as being intrusive.

I had thought the fan would be temperature controlled or only kick in when the amplifier was in TX, but it's on all the time. If the amplifier wasn't in warranty, I'd be tempted to investigate further, but as it is, I am not preparied to open it up.
Now, it could very likely be my hyper sensitivity to lower frequencies that is making it sound worse than it really is and while I've already been on to the dealer, I would like opinions from other owners of this amplifier before I take it any further.

TIA...

I'm not sure it's a guarantee Chris. Many reports of the SS Acom 700S being very loud as an example. I'm waiting on word back about availability of the Linear Amp UK Gemini DX1200 amplifier, as this is an extremely quiet amp.

Took delivery of my Linear Amp UK Gemini DX 1200. Completely silent. Haven't pushed it much beyond some brief testing but yet to hear the fans.
Very pleased
