You can quite easily purchase what are called jack nuts, a cross between a conventional nut and rivet, but I guess it's down to how original you would want your restoration project to be.

I have jacknuts (they come in a pack with door chains that I fit) , but mine are m5 I think. I'd have to drill a 10mm hole for that size. Even with m3, the hole would have to be quite large for them to pass through before they're compressed and I'm not a fan of butchering a decent radio if I can help it. I've also found they tend to be a bit temperamental and can spin with little force as they don't grip that fantastically.

You can get these below which look quite good, but you'd probably have to buy 100,000 of them.

Thanks for your kind offer Auldgeek, I'll certainly have that chassis from you if that's okay? ;)

Just let me know your Paypal-linked email address via a PM and let me know what you want for it and I'll send you my address.
Many thanks :)

For anyone that can't get any replacement plugs like I have coming soon (thanks again Drew), this is the kind of thing below that should do the job nicely. Worst-case scenario is you'd have to possibly open up the existing chassis hole by a millimetre or so to allow the rivnut to be pushed tightly through the chassis. You don't want a sloppy fit though as the fixings need the right size hole to be really effective. All of the old fixings could be replaced if you wanted to keep it looking uniform.

I haven't used rivnuts since 1991 when I used to help fit some aluminium shop fronts and curtain-walling etc, but it's very similar to just using a normal rivet gun, except that you simply unscrew the bolt that has just helped to compress the rivnut in place. The bolt does the pulling/compressing whilst also not allowing the rivnut to deform.

If you look at picture 4, you can see the before and after shots on some ladders as an example:

I'm still looking for these things .

These might do the job , although they don't open up when the screw is inserted , so I'm not 100% sure .

https://m.made-in-china.com/product/M2- ... 63735.html

These are similar .

https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/ ... 08568.html

I've taken a few from an old 360FM for spares just in case I need any in the future . They seem to get brittle over time , so maybe plastic/nylon might be a better option ?

So those are meant to go into plastic, but they look do-able.

The main issue is that they could possibly unscrew as the case screw unscrews. However....

The hole needs to be pretty exact for those to self-tap into though, even into thinish plastic. There's a very good chance they'll close up as they try and force their way into thick chassis metal and make the thread.

Drilling and then tapping a thread, followed by a drop of threadlock should do the job nicely though :)

Drew - the chassis arrived today, so many thanks again ;)
I ended up needing 5 in total as I found another 3 were weak when I put the radio casings back on. I wish people wouldn't tighten them like they're forcing a big screw into a piece of mahogany.

This might be of some use. I believe the rivet nuts are available in the car industry.
