The seller has been up front with me and said that he checks all the radio's before he sends them and has no idea what has gone wrong. So anyway we came to an agreement and I got a partial refund.

I set about tracking down the problem with the radio, virtually no output and the channel frequencies not changing. After I did all the usual checks, the reference and offset frequencies were all bang on, the n codes were correct and what it appeared to be the problem was the VCO block. Voltage was high on TP3 and couldn't be adjusted. So I swapped the block for a known good one and immediately got a healthy RF output. Had to redo several presets, the final bias was about 6 miles off, all the gains were turned up and the two tone was flat topping. After I made the adjustments I got a nice display of the SSB envelopes and the AM modulation pattern. Well worth time to track it all down, and now I will put a KC shift on the clarifier control, be a decent radio in the end :D Image

Nice work yaggiboom, Seems strange that he checked the radio before dispatching it but didn't notice it was a turd, Main thing is your happy with the outcome

Worth checking the bias is correct on the output and final as they are usually low from the factory and may need a resistor changing.
Swizzradios on Youtube has a tutorial if you get stuck
Also change r159 to a 3.9k to improve the fm and ssb as the limiter from new makes the audio clipped

Thanks, whoever had been in it before had wound RV2 all the way clockwise. The ALC and SSB Mic gain pots were high as well but thankfully the TX chain had been left alone.

Glad you came to an amicable agreement with the seller and sorted out the issues with the radio. Good job  It's always disheartening to receive a "new" radio that's a duffer electrically never mind the physical shape.
As has been said, seems mighty strange these pre-dispatch checks were carried out but somehow missed everything!

The seller certainly seems very trustworthy & amicable, which seems to be a rare occurrence these days.

Just looking at that 1st scope image . It shows the Frequency as 24.2868 MHz . Is that right ?

Hmmm.....strange. The images were taken one after the other. Obviously the AM mod was using a single tone and the SSB with two, I will repeat the test tomorrow. The two tones are set at 1.600 and 1.850, the difference in the two displayed frequencies is 2.2276 but it was the same channel I used for both samples. Maybe Cubby might have an idea as when testing like this I am just looking at the waveform.

That goes without saying. More chance of finding a Tory MP who isn't bent than selling anything here :wtf:

In some cases that's not far from the truth. I remember when Lincoln brackets sold for silly money.

All in all a very nice radio though. But we mustn't forget the poor ebayer who forked out £350 for a twiddled one a week before these popped up

So all these new radios appearing will have hammered down the price of them now as they're more commonplace, so £350 now equates to about £80 for a twiddled-with/used one ;)

Unless it's sold by RTI and his growing band of copycats! ;)

Theres a rumour going about that president base their new prices on RTI's turd prices
