Post by Klsg420 »

So your possibly listening to DMR repeater noise.
Does it sound like a jackhammer?
Or possibly got ctcss sub tone set / set wrong so you won’t hear anything

Alright scottyboy thanks for the reply yeah I would say the noise sounds like a hammerjack or a constant beep noise. Last night I subscribed to radioreference uk and I can't remember what channel I put in but I'm sure I heard a female voice then her speech went but I was still on the channel n its was like a constant beep if u get me

Then from radioreferenceuk I've tried a few like 461.400, 461.325, 172.775 I do pick stuff up but just can't hear what's going on I was taking to one of the members at rruk n they said I'd be best getting a dmr radio cause everything is changing or changed. What would u recommend for a newbie that not gawny break the bank just to see if I like the hobby

So the first 2 frequencies listed is the GB3GL ham repeater output, and input.
The 3rd is a 2m ham frequency but of hand not sure if a repeater local to you.
The GL repeater has both analog and digital so you may hear voice and you may hear noises like you have been hearing.
There’s a lot of digital usage these days and still some analog.
What’s your sim from it, are you looking to obtain your ham license or just general listening

You will hear some stuff on analog, but I would say more than 70% will be digital now.
And some of that will have encryption so you won’t hear anything on it.
The retevis RT3 is a decent radio for it, but requires a bit more knowledge for programming etc.
It’s all about the fun of learning.
Just be cautious that you don’t transmit on any frequencies you shouldn’t as that’s something that causes grief for business users.

You have quite a bit of research to do. Ham band repeaters (receivers are very different) and tend to be in two types - small local repeaters - these are the ones that are in the 430 and the 438 bands - they send on the lower one and listen for users on the other one. Many are in people's houses or perhaps where they work - often not very high so not much range. Ones you find in the 433MHz section are area repeaters, run usually by groups, not individuals - and they might cover 25-30 miles. They're also in the VHF band too - in the 145Mhz band. You need analogue repeaters, digital ones sound like a circular saw on a non-digital radio.

Have a look at this site -= https://ukrepeater.net this will let you find the ones closest to you and give you what you need to listen. You don't need tones to listen.

Your real snag is that your current skill level is a bit basic - so if you buy complicated radios, you'll get into a mess. Do some reading and maybe look up your local ham radio club and go to see them for advice - they're always willing to help.

Most folk at air fields will use scanners rather than a dedicated radio.
I have my uniden ubc3500xlt scanner for aircraft / air shows etc.
Download the wtr browser program for a lot of information on local frequencies
