UKRADIOSCANNING - What Gives?

Post by scan125 »

So UKRADIOSCANNING.COM is "offline again with an interesting message/page.

"Site Currently Unavailable"
"If you are the owner, contact your hosting provider for more information."

It is not the first time this particular scanning site has mysteriously gone off-line.

Anybody know anything?

Yes probably.

How many people here on TM1 used UK Scanning Radio?

Was it of value/use or just another "one of many"?

Well it is still down and out today.

Not sure if this is a loss or a gain (traffic to TM1 / others) but a loss regardless.

Before any of us criticise or condemn any other radio site we have to realise that we ourselves are probably registered with a collection of radio sites/forums where we frequent but not always agree. Polite and constructive disagreement is the progression path for all of us.

UKRADIOSCANNING has/had many informative and knowledgeable members and posts over the years so if this off-line status remains it will be a loss.

However thankfully the "Way Back Machine" has content from Jan 2021 so now is possibly the time for you to dig out stuff/info/posts that may be of interest and retention for you.

See: https://web.archive.org/web/20210123005 ... nning.com/

Enjoy

If anyone wants to transfer information from the Way Back machine and post it on our own scanning section I wouldn't object to that. It would retain the info for future use.

Subject to any copyright issues obviously

I was a member on there from the very beginning of the site but still never became a full member after helping many people with problems over the years.

Full membership was by invitation only and if you looked at the full members list you could see the 'type' of people being invited.

The site will not be missed by me in any way and there are far more knowledgeable people on here if you need help or guidance.

Well it looks like the domain is finally gone/purged from the web.

Never take what you have for granted..... like this site for example. Simon funds the site out of his own pocket , for the benefit of everyone, one day he may decide not to do it any more.

It happens sadly. Fingers crossed it never does to TM1

Well thankfully funding one's own website is not too expensive these days. Probably the biggest pain is keeping a site up to date, meaningful, useful, etc.

With a Forum, like TM1, then the the TM1 members basically keep it vibrant (fulfilling up to date, meaningful, useful etc) so for Simon he can focus on cost. (Moderators can take care of the spam etc).

It is not uncommon for some privately funded sites to ask for donations (100 people donating £1 each) makes a huge dent and in many cases covers all the costs.

Well done Simon!

I hope not too, but I would hope that if he no longer wants to continue with it he gives someone else the chance to take it over, or at least would let an interested person have a backup of the site.

What follows is personal waffle, speculation, observation, etc. but may be of interest?

With the absence of formal information from UKRADIOSCANNING then we are only left to speculate. And even if you did not like the site then it would be helpful for all if we knew what actually happened. Any site/business failure, especially in this hobby area, is important to know/understand so that those who may wish to follow on / create new can learn potential valuable lessons.

Interestingly the UK Scanning Directory (https://ukscanningdirectory.co.uk/) is still up and running.

If I'm not mistaken the two site are/were related. That is UK Radio Scanning was the forum and collection of main members and the UK Scanning Directory is a product / spin off from the former.

Now if I recall correctly "Prime" members who had purchased scanning directory could get free updates upon request. Others would have to purchase again.

I had quite a few questions and queries from people about how they could get the UK Scanning Directory info into Scan125 and Scan75. Needless to say the plain text format with no field delimiters made this difficult for many not skilled in the art of file manipulations.

It could be that the UK Scanning Directory funded the UK Radio Scanning website? If new purchases (due to format etc) were declining and free updates for prime members were still good then funding etc. could have been under pressure?

Of course all this is my person speculation / view which is probably 110% wrong. That said even if you did not like the UKRADIOSCANNING site it was fairly vibrant and there must be many people upset, even more so at being dumped out of the blue!
