Croughton <> Fairford radio check

Post by Minus1 »

Unexpected activity on the Croughton P25 net this morning --- a radio check with Fairford. I didn't know they could receive each other, though with power they use I probably shouldn't be surprised! :o

Using the path profiler, I would assume that they can't! Unless they have some very high towers for the antennas.

Possibly they have an ROIP link between the two sites?

Yeah, I assume it must be some kind of link. For a normal user I'd guess over the internet, but with the RAF it might be satellite or something

The radio tower at Croughton is massive (51.993ºN 1.186ºW), you can see it on Google Streetview from the B road north of the base.
There's a similar tower at Fairford (51.689ºN 1.777ºW)
And the radio mast at the former USAF base at Upper Heyford (almost in line between Croughton & Fairford) is still there (51.929ºN 1.268ºW) …
