President Jack not receiving

Post by Mudslinger »

Hi Everyone, I recently got myself a Black president Jack as part of a job lot. It is tidy and transmits in all modes ok but it isn't picking up any signals.

There is sound from the speaker but just the usual hash on all modes.

Are there any common component faults which can cause this on this radio or the related Stalker 9?

Many thanks.

If it is in all modes this area need to be checked.

Try to disable AGC first.
Any signal coming from VCO to TR15?

It is in all modes.

One thing I have noticed is that the 455 Black ceramic filter and surrounding components have a dollop of that awful glue which eats component legs around them.

I will have to check out a bit further when I get home from work.

Thanks for the help

455 filter have nothing to do with your failure.
I assume microphone is shorting pin 1 and 4 when plugged and green led is lit?

Because the 455 filter isn't used on SSB.

Thanks guys, the microphone is switching the radio between TX and RX. RX is also very quiet as well as not picking up any signals. The low level of hiss doesn't change tone or volume when the mode switch is moved or the volume/squelch.

I may just send it to Nick as I have a few other bits to go for repair too.

Thanks mate, will take a look when I get chance. How would I tell if signals are getting from VCO to TR15 or disable AGC? I have a multimeter and I am handy at soldering, just don't have a huge amount of radio repair know how.

To disable AGC lift one leg of D14.
To check VCO signal you need freq counter.

Unfortunately I don't have a counter at present.
Not a problem, I will send it to Nick along with a couple of others which I have.

Thanks for the help. :)
