Hi from the South coast

Post by Magic Mike »

Hello everyone,
Thanks for opening the door for me :D I'm down on the south coast near Hastings, East Sussex on top of a hill about 270ft above sea level and I have just dug out my old Midland 77-1165 from the attic after about 25 years gathering dust.

I am going to be putting up an aerial this weekend (looks like a Thunderpole Silver Rod 5/8 Wave Hi-Gain but is 6.25M not 5.65M) on top of a 5M fibreglass pole. I did know what it was called, but after 25 years I just about remembered where I stored it. Just need to find the SWR meter now, and no the Mrs does not know where I put it. The attic is about the only domain where she does not want to venture, thank you all the spiders :)

Sadly I have forgotten many of the basics (old age creeping in :? ). Can I check SWR before I mount it on the pole, i.e. at ground level, or do I need to have it on the pole?

regards, Magic Mike

Check it wherever you will be using it. You can adjust it lower down, but check it where it will be used - on the pole.

Thanks for that Otter :D , it's going to be fun, the first adjustment point will be 18 feet from ground level. I think i may have to be put it up SWR it, take it down, make adjustments, remount it, and repeat as necessary lol, still i'll only have to get it right once :D

I've just spent a fruitless couple of hours searching for my SWR meter and uncovered things in my attic that i'd hoped to see the last of. Gave up in the end and ordered one on Amazon because i've run out of boxes to build one in.

Sadly the guy who gave me the interest in ham radio and CB is no longer with us, but i'm sure he's 'on the side' listening in and laughing his socks off at what i''m doing. R.I.P. Bob, energy never dies, it just moves from place to place.

Great to hear you still have a passion and enthusiasm for the hobby. Something that Bob gave you all those years ago. We all have a Bob, that someone who sparked the fire.

R.I.P. all the Bobs we've lost.
