How much current for small linear

Post by KILLERPARSNIP »

Hello all,

Just wondered what sort of current a small 25/30 watt amp will draw ? I have a 5/7 amp power supply and wondered if it would power both radio and amp.

Thanks all

3 watts is around 1 amp so 30 will be around 10 amps (roughly speaking).

I am going to say about 5 Amps, as my KL-203p which was 100 watts would pull 16A at full tilt.

That was a Mosfet too so probably not quite as efficient as a regular power transistor type.

Use the 5-7 for the amp and another say 3-5amp for the radio separately if you don't want to buy a big power supply, but have 2 smaller ones ;)

Rough guide is 2 times for what's needed, example being: 25watts is around 6amps. I'll assume the little amp will get 4 watts from a radio shoved into it so another couple of amps, in tx mode mode then looking around 8amps total at the top end - a 10/12amp psu for it and the radio therefore should be ok but these days 25/30amp psu's are a better investment or a good one can be made from a computer psu, however if prefer 'old school' transformer type then best to buy one imo. Get a good psu and keep it, folk change their radios but should always hang on to a good psu investment.

Or as another member has said have two smaller psu's.

Making a stealth antenna can add to the fun, a good option is a T2LT coaxial dipole which can easily be hidden in a tree.

here is how to make one, also whilst you are there check out some of Gary's other videos.

The radio has been on continuous now on 19 and as yet I haven't heard anything at all ! I'm in South Shropshire.

I've been using a coaxial Dipole for 2 and 6 meters for a number of years it does work well and can be made very covert.
