Depends on if you have any files or software on the computer that you would miss or don't have backups of, eg photos, music etc.
If you don't have anything then a straightforward format and restore would obviously cure it.
Just a thought though, how come you don't have a installation disc to reinstall Windows?

Can you access anything on the PC? If you can try a programme called 'spybot'. Look for ways to get rid of 'ransomware', that's what you have on the PC, if you can't get rid of it you'll have to take it to a PC doctor for treatment.

If you're not fussed about losing any of the files on the machine, do a clean rebuild. You'll need a legit licence key though.

Then, follow the steps on the link below which will allow you to download the media to rebuild your machine from, USB or DVD.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/softwar ... d/windows7

Personally, I;d format the hard disk too. If you have another hard disk you can use, build the new OS on that and there *maybe* a chance you can add the original disc to the machine later and retrieve the files, but that would also open up the possibility of re-infection

Have you tried flushing the power supply?

They say you should only use de-ionized water for this, although the truth is any liquid with a reasonably high water content will do. Even a mug of tea, which let's face it you are bound to have closer to hand.

Just tip the PC up on its front and tip it all in through the little holes on the back. You won't believe it's the same computer afterwards...

download any free linux distribution such as mint, install direct from disk this will allow you to retrieve any files you want to save. Spybot search and destroy is a good shout too, have it on all my pc's. Hope this helps.

Errrrm... I know I told him to pour a cup of tea into his computer, but he might actually try this! Did you mean to say boot from the disk WITHOUT installing? That could work but there is then the question of where to copy the files that you are saving to? Depending on how much data there is and what other hardware you have to hand, that could be problematic.

Far simpler to download the Win 7 iso, burn it to a CD, boot from the CD and then perform a repair install. ;)

The only way to remove ransomware is from outside the windows environment. remove the hdd and use another pc to remove it. formatting is a last resort and the easiest option offered by most people. If you are near Preston, I can remove the ransomware for you. Otherwise look up "bootable Antivirus". Download one on another PC and burn the image to a DVD/CD. Then boot the infected PC from the DVD drive.
