Hoping to do Foundation Course
Hi folks. Does anyone know of a radio club in Ayrshire area that offers training for the foundation course. I was quite interested in anywhere that does home study as my shifts at work probably won't allow me to attend every club meeting.

Hey hows things?
right then, heres what to do,
first of all visit the RSGB site on finding a local club. link below
http://rsgb.org/main/clubs-training/find-a-club/
second of all buy and read the foundation now book, link below
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Foundation-Lice ... icence+now
read it cover to cover, and any parts you get stuck on then feel free to ask us all on here and im sure we will point you in the right direction.
infact all of us on here have enough knowledge combined to sit someone through the foundation intermediate and advanced licenses. its just being bothered to help that person along.
you say you wont be able to attend a club due to your work shifts, but make sure you buy and read the foundation book cover to cover, and send some emails to your local clubs to find out about the exam arrangements.

Alex,
There are two clubs in Ayrshire, depending where you are located:-
Kilmarnock and Loudoun Amateur Radio Club (KLARC), who meet at the East Ayrshire Council Internal Transport Depot, Crookedholm nr Kilmarnock
on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 730pm. Call sign GM0ADX
Website: http://www.mm0bim.freeserve.co.uk/home.htm
.
Ayr Amateur Radio Group (AARG), who meet at Asda Ayr (staff training rooms), Heathfield Retail Park, Liberator Drive, Ayr
on alternate Wednesdays. Call sign GM0AYR.
Website: http://gm0ayr.org
I am sure that either club should be able to help you out, both are very good, proactive, welcome new members and offer progressive tuition & training (I think but please check) to help you get your foundation (and with further training and encouragement) help you attain intermediate and then full licence. As suggested, buy the book(s). There is plenty of help available on this forum when you have questions as well as a wealth of knowledge from club members, whom I am sure would support you, as and when you can attend training and meetings. When licenced, I think that both clubs have local natter 'nets' for club members on 2m FM (again I may be out of date).
As Red Dragon suggested, this is the link to the RSGB Region 1 South West Scotland & Western Isles site, which has contact details for the Regional Manager:

All the best and welcome to the very interesting and 'varied world' of amateur radio.

Re: Hoping to do Foundation Course
Firstly, I'm very pro-foundation, however, there are 2 ways of passing it;
1. Learning the questions thoroughly to pass the exam.
2. Read the book thoroughly, read the Chelmsford Amateur Radio Societies training notes (linky linky) and when you are ready, do some practice tests to ensure you have proper knowledge.
Clearly 1 gets you a ticket. The 2nd way means that you don't need to ask basic questions such as "Is it /m or /p" or "How long do I have to wait for a ticket?"
