PRO 2042 scanner, any good??

Hi folks

Have took a punt on buying a very cheap fully working PRO 2042 scanner.

Does anyone own one or have experience of using one as id like to know are they still a decent scanner.

i know they are a little dated but the 1000 channel memory and coverage is something thats drawn me to buying one as a starter base scanner.

all the realistic scanners are good for the money mate,invest in a good discone aerial and get it up as high as possible...

Have a read here Steve http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/5277 Seems it's quite highly thought of.It took over from the PRO 2006 I believe,and was better in that it had 1000 channels as opposed to 400 on the 2006,and it also has a tuning knob,which would come in handy.Good luck.

there seems to be quite a few decent reviews out there for them so i thought at a dirt cheap price i couldnt pass it up. ive been using different handheld scanners for over a year now, so to my other halfs disliking im going for a homebase scanner to clutter up the room a bit more lol..

Tell her she ain't seen nothing yet Steve. Next thing will be another scanner so you can listen to one thing while you're searching for another,then there'll be the discone on the chimney,the co-ax all over the place,and then the HF set,then the other HF set,then the multi mode and the silver rod on the roof.............

If it's 'very cheap' then it doesn't matter if it's any good or not.

The 2042 is okay, if anyone needs 1000 analogue channels in 2012 then well done them.

If it's less than £50 then give it a go.

cheap or not was not the question, i was merely asking if there any good as i took a chance on it at the price.
as for the 1000 channels, im sure i will never need all of them but sure no harm in having them?

There are hundreds of channels that could suddenly burst into life (not just mil air) that most scanner owners would probably find interesting. The name of the game these days is to scan the whole lot as fast as you can, so 100ch/sec Unidens are ideal, especially with the PC programming to make it a breeze.

yeah i have been keeping an eye on some new type uniden base scanners on flee bay, some have very good spec and scan speeds. ive been used to handhelds for over a year now ranging from a commtel 206 to a uniden 92xlt and 230e.

but thought i might give a homebase a try, so going to try the 2042 and work my way up to something more modern as i save the pennies up!!

I have 2435 channels used in my 3500xlt and all currently in use during day/night , I actually had to delete some to fit in the 2500 allowed

yeah theres definately lots to be had out there depending on where you live though some on here seem to disagree lol.

i have myself over 300 freqs for my local area where i live in northern ireland. ranging from taxis to local shops, factories and coastguard channels. i was using a ubc92xlt great little scanner but with the 200 channel limit i had to delete some and keep the more active channels in it.

now ive got the extra memory on the pro 2042 i can get them all on there and hopefully more as i find them.

They are hard to fault, especially if you can pick one up at the right price. The prices do go a bit silly for them on ebay sometimes though.

I know there have been some comments in threads about the scan speed compared to the newer stuff but this is the only scanner I have that will let me scan through all the acars freqs instead of leaving it sat on just one and get decodes. My hit rate on acars has shot up by a huge amount scanning through them instead of leaving it on my usual 131.725.

My far newer and more modern 3500 actually seems to struggle just sat on one freq in comparison, I seem to think the incremented volume control rather than the good old analogue style of the 2042 could be the problem.
