Re: current standards of the foundation licencee..
theres no point in a 5yr having an foundation lisense except as a publicity stunt.
will a 5yr old be interested in radio ?, no and i doubt they would even understand what it is
can you imagine trying to have a on air conversation with a 5yr ? wtf are you going to talk about ??
if you did have a conversation with them on air you would probly have the cops raid your house
"chatting up a minor" or some other bs.

Amateur radio would have been fine with difficult entry exams - but then the Internet happened. Now young people aren't interested in radio.Yeti wrote: In fact, the Intermediate is so easy that I do agree that it should be the starting level.
Unless you make it easier to get a licence - you're not going to have anyone to talk to.
So, make it as hard as you like to get a amateur radio licence, but you'll have spent thousands talking to yourself.
The US has a similar three tier exam structure. I've had a look at their exams, the Technician isn't very hard. Although, I do believe a Technician has restricted access - which is what we should have done.
One criticism I have with our system is - why can't you go for the full licence at first, why do you have to do the other levels before. I would have studied and gone for an M0 straight away, but now I'm losing interest.

Re: current standards of the foundation licencee..
that's a really purile argument stance!
When you read something you don't like call it "nonsense"
as far as I can see you have not added anything to this debate, and as for using it as a platform to snipe at amateurs that still choose to operate on the triple it is truly despicable.
How can you openly take the side of a legislative structure that is blatantly wrong, improperly maintained and almost never enforced against a long term radio user (or users) that has done NO HARM WHATSOEVER to amateur Radio in the UK.
Much more harm is done by letting offensive fk'tards get a foundation license and then come on all "Armageddon" on your local repeater or whamming an ameritron to the max on the ham bands
stigggeh...looks like your getting the hobby you deserve brother.
Now sit down! ...with 8 posts it looks like you may be hiding behind something ....come on let's have it ...Who are you?, lets see the callsign you are so proud of !

Locally we've had a lot of problems with the quality of some newbies.
Funny how they all come from the same "source".
I see that the "source" is now listed for some reason as an "independent"
instructor.
Does this mean that they don't get officially supported or affiliated to the RSGB
anymore due to the high amount of complaints about the source ?
This is how the RSGB website now lists the current south east instructors -

None of this would happen if everybody was a contester. You wouldn't turn a QSO away whatever their prefix. There...I have fixed amateur radio. Although a 5 year old probably couldn't run a frequency at 200+ Q's/hr. Back to the drawing board I guess.

Re: Re:current standards of the foundation licencee..
I have spoke with the guy from the Sandwich district quite a few times over the CB, yes he uses a CB for his activity's on there, he offered to help me through the foundation test, he is very reputable and totally steadfast to the upkeep and good standards of amateur radio users in our area, i listen to all the newbies that make it through and there is no trouble down here, only one guy that goes on a bender sometimes he's a G i forget the other bit, but a long term amateur that's fallen from grace, shame as when his sober he sounds fine, but the guy in Sandwich would not entertain any rubbish.WhiteNoisePoetry wrote:Locally we've had a lot of problems with the quality of some newbies.

Its a shame that most jump on the M6/M3 bandwagon. you only have to listen to G7ERX and G1DRA to relise that the rot was set many many years ago !
Ofcom need to tighten things up, If it means that amateurs need to put there hands in there pockets and pay yearly for there licence then that can only be a good thing in my opinion, if it gets rid of the twats.

uk.amateur.radio is the Mos Eisley Spaceport of Amateur Radio.
Will the next movie in the series be The Fast and The Funeral?

Agree 100%
If I'd had known that amateur radio was full of biggoted, short - minded users I wouldn't had bothered studying for the foundation exam and saved my money!
I've been interested in amateur radio since the age of 11 (we had a radio club and ejoyed listening to 10M on a bit of wire) - I'm 43 years of age now and want to take the hobby to the next level (I've been busy or I'd have done it sooner)
It now seems to me that amateur radio is no better than 27.78125 on the muppets!

I was warned that some hams didn't like M6's, but once I got on the air, I didn't see any sign of it - everyone has been as good as gold.dnakaraoke wrote:It now seems to me that amateur radio is no better than 27.78125 on the muppets!

oh you missed the Mhz and FM off the end.. or to try and be a real amateur F3E !!
and while i'm picking faults where would 27.781.25 be if not in the muppets ?? on the ISS downlink channel..!!
?? being pedantic sorry..
and to listen to amateur radio on 2mtrs (thats in the 144mhz to 146mhz band) is just as bad as CB..
with so much swearing on repeaters, chatting like their on the phone, and music playing and mic keying..!!
and most if not all these people are amateurs..!!
