The last model for sale was the CD version (colour display) and that was several years back. Now long discontinued.

Yes discontinued.

There weren't a bad radio, l owned a couple of them back in the early noughties, one of l bought brand new from Truck King.

I think the CD version used a plug in chip or something to give the expanded frequencies?

Actually l'm not sure they have been discontinued, after doing a bit of Googling there's a 2950 DX6 that keeps popping up which are available to buy from the states. There's info about on Simon The Wizard's website.

Found two videos on YT of the DX6, a recent updated version of it comes with a white display instead of the blue.

The video of the white display one is by Truck CB Sales, they have a lot of ranger models on their website.

I have the black screen with green display model. It's not bad at all for viewing from different angles. The original orange back-lit version was terrible for viewing from the sides or above and below though.

I definitely prefer the Blue display than the white
The old Ranger 2950 orange display as were the fist version 2950 DX very hard to read at an Angle .

If you buy a brand new 2950 / 2970 that's straight from a supplier they need to be aligned and tuned, untouched from the manufacturer they are rubbish.

It depends I suppose. I've had a few untouched 2950's over the years. Some have been better than others. The one I have now I've had since new. I only opened the bottom lid to do the expansion mod with the plug in dongle thing which came in the box. Nothing else was touched. It's by far the best 2950 I've owned/used. If it wasn't It's doubtful I'd still own it.

FM receive was awful on the ones l had and SSB was off frequencies on TX, all sorted when sent off for aligning. They may have got better on subsequent revisions / better QC before leaving the production line, the ones l had were pre e-chip models with all same size digits readout.

Had a 2970 DX-150 since new in 2007. Same digit size throughout. Solid performer.
For mobile it dispensed the need for any further "help" so to speak and coupled with a 575-m6 and a megawatt 4k I had many a happy DX pedition.
I have a faint memory of the FM issue but I rarely used FM so not an issue afaic.

Since 2007 there was the N N2 and more it seems, no idea what they are like.

If I was being pedantic about the design, id say the knobs and control were too close together for sausage fingers but I'd buy another, so there's that.

They weren't bad at all when running right, but a HF set is better for the money today imo.
