Bloody SWR meters
Hey all. I have two SWR meters here or should I say SWAAAAAR meters, One is a Welz SP-15M and the other is a Avair AV-600 but they both give different readings. With a dummy load in they both show a perfect SWR, The needle does not move so I guess they are ok. It's not a huge difference but on 26.000MHZ for examplle one shows 1.6 and the other 1.9. So which one do I believe?

Re: Bloody SWR meters
It is simple to verify.
Grab 100 Ohm resistor and measure SWR. Should be 2:1
Than you will know your meter accuracy.

Re: Bloody SWR meters
Connect them in reverse and they should read the same if properly calibrated.

Re: Bloody SWR meters
Cheap meters are simply indications, not remotely accurate, but I suppose there's no real need for most users.

Re: Bloody SWR meters
Well it's looks like the Welz meter is accurate and the Avair is not. Learn something everyday on here

Re: Bloody SWR meters
I suppose any cheap meter is going to suffer from using two different component chains to do the measuring, which explains why the very expensive Bird meters do VSWR measurement by having one small plug in element with the measuring components that you physically turn through 180 degrees to do the forward vs return measurements. Effectively working like swapping the ins and outs around.

Re: Bloody SWR meters
I'm completely new to radio and have read about and watched loads of vids on SWR meters recently.
I just receive at the moment on a discone, but would need a meter when the CB antenna goes up to transmit.
I would like at a later date to maybe get more into Amateur radio (license) so I ended up getting a Nissei DG 503max.
This is clearly overkill for a simple CB setup I understand, I just wanted to future proof myself, if I end up transmitting on the discone - at non CB frequencies that would need SWR adjustment.
Just my 2 cents from a new guy.
