Yes the kits a bit steep. I estimate that the project on the original link will cost about ?15 to ?20. not cheap but better than ?70. only problem is that I think it would take 5 -6 hours to build each capacitor.

When I have some more free time I think I will give it a go if I build a couple hopefully I wont have to build anymore.

I spoke to a work colleague how said that when he was an electronics student
He used to make variable capacitors out of steal or copper tubing with rubber tap washer as insulators. This many be an un scientific but simple way to make a variable capacitor.
