I had one of those, plus a similar Amstrad (gold and black??) one. We used to use them on our bicycles, although I mainly used my Alba 40ch one as the 2ch ones were limited channel-wise. Saying that, there were always people on ch30 back in those chockablock days.

I remember making my young brother an adapter of a quarter wave coil and PL plug to go over the short telescopic antenna on his 2 channel Amstrad CB so he could connect it to the halfwave vertical on the roof for a few miles extra range in the early 80s, happy days.

I still have my Alba 40ch handheld. I bought it off my sister as she had that for an early Christmas present and I had my Fidelity Homebase, both from Makro. She got bored of it after about a couple of months, whereas I got more and more into it.

We had Shira 2 channel set's that we're basically the same as to what Dave described.

Range was about 1/2 a mile handle to base but set to set was less

Squelch was pointless and audio was pants too.

But it got plenty of people and kid's on the air

There was a bloke opposite me last Sunday at Cheddar car boot sale trying to flog a boxed Shira 2ch for £25. I did chuckle.

I'm still looking for a boxed black-top Alba 40ch handheld like the one you have Dave. An unboxed one was on ebay until it was pulled today for same reason (probably got an offer offline).

90% of them are silver-topped (earlier version) like the Harrier WT2, but they changed to the black top later, same as the Harvard 410T.

I'm soooo sad! ;)

Oooooo.... and I think the picture on the later box may have been in black and white, or at least less colourful than the earlier ones anyway.

If you watch the movie Woodstock, you see one of the guys using, I assume, a 40 channel handheld

Complete with the telescopic antenna
