Anyone heard of a Sirio 827 that has snapped ?

I used an 827 for a few year and just wanted to know if anyone had experiences of an 827 snapping,I thought it was well built for what they cost and the wind was 95mph here and it was fine.Only heard of Imax and Gainmaster snapping up here so far but not the 827,cheers.

I've had my Gainmaster up for a good few years and it's survived all the big storms we've had. I can't say I've heard of any 827's snapping but, like any other antenna, they won't be indestructible when it comes to extreme weather.

NO, my mate had a 827 up 19 years on the chimney LOL with no damage to it or the chimney,he got someone to take it down last year who threw it off the roof and it only bent a few radials...

I have had my 827 roughly 9yrs with no problems and where i am we do get very high winds, Only minor issue i have had is the original screws in the sections losing grip so sections became wobbly so i had to put slightly larger threaded self tappers in, That was a while back and no problems since, The weakest part of the 827 is where the so239 socket connects to the coil can snap, I bought another 827 which was as almost new condition about 2yrs ago as a spare and so far it has had no use.

One solution I heard of to cure the loosening screws issue is to drill right through and use proper screws along with nyloc nuts on the other side.

I can't think of a cb shop bought cb antenna that i have not seen snap in the wind over the years, even 2 section super big sticks & a99's,

827's have a habit of going open circuit before they snap, the mounting kits they sell to put the 827 on a scaffold pole snap,

on the other hand i have seen antennas with ;ess durable build quality than the 827 such as big-mac & electronica special & ar5/8 stay alive on 50-73ft flexible poles only to fall apart when mounted on a stiffer 20ft pole,

yup. thats why my vector has been up through every bit of bad weather in the last 3 years and isnt even bent!

Plenty of flex in the mounting pole is the key to your antenna surviving, I see lots of pics with antennas mounted on a short 5ft pole which puts the strain on the antenna. I have 15ft of pole past my top bracket so it can bend in strong winds.

It's not the strength of the wind that causes the damage, it's the gusts that does it. Anything that is rigid will suffer wind damage far sooner than anything that can flex and if you have winds gusting to 95mph + you can expect damage to occur.

There are aluminium antennas out there that will withstand 100mph+ winds & ice loading far worse than we get in the uk, sadly they don't come at sirio prices.

I had a sirio 2012 that withstood quite a bit of wind-abuse while I had it...probably 70mph gusts IIRC, but it was only about 12ft off the ground, 25ft behind the house.
The older aerials were always a touch thicker although not "aircraft grade".

Had an A-99 up 30ft when the local windspeed was recorded at 102 due to hurricane bawbag,and it looked like a fly rod with a submarine on the end,have been lucky and not had an antenna snap so far........if the Imax ever goes it will be replaced with another aluminium antenna.

My 827 has been up about 9 years now, it was 2nd hand from a mate who had dropped it across his neighbours conservatory and fence so it came with a few dents in a few sections. It's mounted on top of a 12ft scaffolding section using a 6ft steel brewers pole/tube which is bolted into the base of the 827 using the original D-clamps and simply dropped into the scaffold tube. I taped up the joint to prevent water ingress, it rocks and bends in high winds but so far hasn't failed or snapped. So all thats holding it in place is the weight of the brewers tube and some insulation tape.

Would the 827 work better with 4 x 9 ft ground planes ??

It didn't do the siggy 2 or Ham Int. Hy-Power aerials any harm with their 9ft radials It'd catch the wind a bit more though so prepare for a bit more wobbling.
