Beam

Post by Farty »

Just made myself a 6 element beam for UHF using this chaps measurements...

http://users.belgacom.net/hamradio/sche ... ntenna.htm

Used PVC pipe for the beam, so the elements are insulated and the radiation pattern is maintained during vertical polarisation.

Anyhoo, it seems to work nicely on 70 so I plugged in a Bumfeng and straight away picked up some traffic on PMR channel 1 analogue. Listening in it sounds like some gamekeepers running a shoot in some woods near Salcey Forest in South Northants, so the beam seems to be working very nicely.

Soon I'll be lashing it to my bergan and heading for the high ground for a spot of dxing on UHF and 446.

I had a go at making some once.

My homebrew pair
26ft long each. They worked quite well, they were not for hanging on the end of a PMR rig though. Similar frequency though 432mhz.
Best dx was 2994km into Tenerife on SSB.

Cripes! That might be a bit big for my bergan.

Built and tuned mine for 70, but it'd be rude not to have some 446 fun if the opportunity arises ;) I'll take the wooden clamps off tomorrow, they're just holding the radiating elements while the epoxy cures.

If it's where I think they are they're about 15 miles as the crow flies.

That's not bad, if they're in woods and not up a hill. Well done.
