Thick question alert ! V vs H Dipole Ohms

Post by knobby »

Why does a horizontal or inverted V work with 50 ohm coax but a vertical is recommended at 70 ohm ?

Also, why is there no mention of this on a chope bought horizontal dipole ?

I'd always thought a dipole whether horizontal or vertical should have an impedance of around 70-75 ohms, by bringing the two legs closer together as an inverted V or a V configuration brings the impedance down so it can be brought to that magic 50 ohms our commercial transceivers like. However 70-75 ohms is still under 2:1 on the SWR meter so not worth worrying about.... but I may be wrong.
