Old Class B Operator
Hi All
I am totally confused, I was a class b operator back in the 1990's and want to renew my license. If I do this what status will I have as a radio amateur? In other words what frequencies can I legally use? I've tried contacting Ofcom on Twitter as advised in another post but they aren't replying
Can anyone help or advise me with this?
Kind regards
David GW7EMO

Hi, go to Ofcom's website http://www.ofcom.org There should be links to amateur radio licencing.
It generally isn't a problem. You may have to show your old C&G RAE certificate and may have to provide evidence of holding your old callsign. I think you can apply for a M0 if you wish. When I renewed my licence about 6 years ago, I contacted the RSGB and they kindly sent me a photocopy of my old callsign from the RSGB Callsign Book, which I sent to Ofcom and used as evidence of my old callsign.
As for status, you will have full status as per previous 'A' licence, so that means basically you now have access to HF up to 400 watts (apart from that segment of 160m that has a power restriction of 32 watts). Also you can apply for an NoV for 60m (5MHz) if you wish to.

Re: Old Class B Operator
the old B class is now a full licence..
so you will be allowed to use up to 400w and have all band privileges as the old A licence did..

You dont have to learn dah dah di di dit's or anything like that now.
and you can run upto 400 Watts with total carefree abandon.
Oh you can also apply for an NOV to operate on 60m 5MHz band its all done over the internet and is usually granted within an hour of applying! But be aware our allocation is for channel frequencies and its USB not the usual LSB for that band!
cheers Mark
Welcome back to the hobby David

Hello David
If you're still in Cardiff I would pop along to Highfields club in Rhiwbina, or the Barry club, or even us up in the Rhondda!! So I was told you need a copy of your old licence, if you want to keep your callsign, your RAE pass or Radio Amateur's certificate and 20 of the finest united kingdom pounds to get you back on the air from 136KHz to 134GHz (with gaps!!)

Re: Old Class B Operator
It will be in your new licence!! Give OFCOM a ring and tell them you wish to reactivate you old callsign and they will take you through the process, you'll need to get an OFCOM login to verify your call every 5 years. (I do mine a few times a year just to be sure!!)

That would be a problem. You could contact C&G for a copy of the RAE certificate.
