Two Ariels off one plug

Post by Scott_93 »

So I have a Yaesu 8800 sat here in front of me that's capable of cross band repeat and has been free banded, anyway my question is how can I connect two different ariels to it (it only has one output socket) and let the science choose the best matched ariel to use. This is for using one frequency in VHF and one in UHF that aren't harmonically resonant so can't share the same frequency.

So is it possible?

And if so how ?

Scott.

a switch box is the obvious way, but not sure if a duplexer will work in reverse..

why not just buy a dual band aerial, or a switcher box ??

Has to be remotely switchable ie operate on it's own.

Can't use a dual band ariel as it's not in the ham bands, nor are the frequencies harmonically resonant.

surely the way he wants to use it is the norm?

Lots of people who work satellites use a duplexer for 2 antennas as the uplink and downlink are usually on different bands.

They also work both ways.

not sure if you can only use a duplexer one way, as in two rigs one aerial..
unless you can use one rig two aerials from one, never tried so don't know..

Ah I forgot about that,
So I take it the ariel that matches best is the one that gets the load then ?

Of course a SWR check will happen to make sure but in theory it would work ?

Duplexer

Diplexer

Wiki has a good explanation. Hope this helps and good luck

Ah ha,

So a Duplexer allows a separate transmitter and receiver to share a common antenna whereas a Diplexer allows one transmitter/receiver to share two different antennas, usually one higher in frequency, one lower, both switched via a high-pass or low-filter.

It's starting to make more and more sense now.

So how would I make myself a Diplexer ?

(Please forgive my lack of knowledge, I'm only an intermediate)

search duplexer on ebay, Plenty for sale.

They print duplexer on them so thats what I call them. Will work for 2 radios 1 antenna or one radio 2 antennas. ;)
