Uniden 2830 / Hr2510 Off usb band

Post by Poteroa »

Hello!

Got one uniden 2830 back from tx death, but still problems with usb being Off.
I just love this radio a it has 10 and 11m mod, great radio!

Did the RX adjustment, but unfortunately no gear to do the transmit part.

If anyone had idea what to look for, I would be forever grateful.

So what have I done for now?

with oscilloscope next adjustments:

Preset to: Adjustment Remarks
1 Mode : RX, AM
SG : 28MHz L315 Connect an oscilloscope to TP306.
Adjust L315 For 6.200MHz +/- reading on the oscilloscope.
2 Ditto L318 Connect the oscilloscpe to TP304.
Adjust L318 for 38.695MHz +/- 20Hz reading on the oscilloscope.
3 Mode : RX, AM
SG : 29.6999 MHz L317 Connect a DC Voltmeter to TP303.
Adjust L317 for 6.5 +/- 0.1V reading on the Dc Voltmeter.
4 Mode : RX, CW
SG : 28 MHz L117 Connect the oscilloscope to TP1.
Adjust L117 for 10.6950MHz +/- 20Hz reading on the oscilloscope.
5 Mode : RX, LSB L118 Adjust L118 for 10.6925MHz (-40Hz to +0Hz) reading on the oscilloscope)
6 Mode : RX, USB L116 Adjust L116 for 10.6975MHz +/- 20 Hz reading on the oscilloscope.
7 Mode : RX, USB VR111 Connect the oscilloscope to TP5.
Adjust VR111 for 38.6975MHz +/- 20 Hz reading on the oscilloscope

Everything is bang on, but vr111 adjustment does not do anything, same reading on both ends of pot..

After this I am still off on transmit, quite alot.

On 28 usb 27.285mhz People say I am really low, and only way to get on band is to set 27.285.3mhz from knob and adjust RIT to decrease modulation on RX. Then its all good.

What am I missing here? Bad cap or Bad crystal?

Any help to point me to right direction would Make my Day.

Oh, oscilloscope is Uni-t 2102CEX, brand new

VR111 must adjust voltage. Broken? What are voltages on beginning, end and middle?
Check both diodes going to middle of it. D156 and 168.

Thank you for reply ch25.

I followed the guide from Rogerbirds pages "retune".

http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/s ... clnk&gl=fi
(Have to use cached version of the pages, as it otherwise tends to open some spam)..

At TP5 should show 38.6975Mhz, no mention about measuring any voltage for adjustment.
So had scope on TP5 and adjusting VR111 had no affect on RX, USB freq.

"7 Mode : RX, USB VR111 Connect the oscilloscope to TP5.
Adjust VR111 for 38.6975MHz +/- 20 Hz reading on the oscilloscope"

So without any adjustment it shows within one Hz, but seems odd that it does not affect anything. And that should be the TX adjustment...

Rig is otherwise stock, only 11m mod done to it, (D312 wire mod) to enable 26.000Mhz.

Had 2 bad caps on TX side that have been replaced and on AM side amp I replaced some caps that were little off.

On FM and AM everything is working fine, only the USB is giving me headache.

I will check the diodes tonight.

I had to replace about a dozen caps on the last 2830 that I had . My Lincoln's have never had that issue ... yet . They're later models , but I'm sure their time will come as well .

If I were you I'd recap the whole radio , and then start fault finding .

No chance to test the LSB yet, here in Finland we barely use it.

The CB-hobby here is slowly dying, and just a couple of people are online occasionally.

We mainly us only USB 28 cause of that.

I will check the diodes now and hope to find the fault there.

Use freq meter on TP5 and check if there are any changes while turning vr111.

Got it!

So how I got it done?

Found 4 more bad caps (all of them 47uF).

Also found topic with similar issues.

28Mhz USB adjusting RX/TX with dead key to mach TX & RX with VR111

Now the freq. is bang on!

Only got a new issue. :D

Slight distortion in RX/TX on USB bands, FM is perfect, so must be something on PLL board.

Does recapping involve changing only the electrolytics or ANY and all capacitors?

I think it's also recommended to change the tantalum ones as well , although I'm not sure if the 2830 has any , or not ?

I did not have any issues with the tantalum caps, they seem to hold their values much better than the electrolytic ones, of course.

From what I replaced some were still ok, but from 14 caps (I think) that I replaced, most of them were less than half of the values what they should have been.

Just ran out of my old stock, so still few needs to be replaced.

Radio is as perfect as can be for 28 yrs old lady.
