Respraying rotell rvc 240 ,best colour match

Post by original45 »

time to respray my old rotel case and maybe the side edges of front face as it was a fair bit scratched when it arrived.

Anyone found a close current spray paint that matches well.

Thanks

Knights do a paint that's really close. So close that they call it Rotel Graphite!

Ford Graphite Grey Metallic was the one I found to be closest "off the shelf", but that was back in the late 80's-early 90's. You may not get it off the shelf now but a paint place could knock you up some.

Ford Mercury Grey was a shade lighter if I recall correctly.

Remember to lacquer it if you want it protected better, or leave it for a matt/satin look but risk scratching it easier.

BTW, Halfords no longer do in-store cans made to customers req's, but they can order them in from elsewhere. It takes 3-4 days though. Their cans used to have a very good spray pattern but I don't know if their supplier's can's nozzles will be as good.

Ford graphite grey ,Yes I had a recollection earlier it was such as I did one back in the day.
Google suggest it's still available too when I looked quickly . Will look again.

Should be enough in a halfords can to do a couple or more well.

I seem to remember not lacquering it either as it glossed it too much.

I've done a few over the years in that colour, that's why I remember the exact colour. My "Ham International Cougar" was Ford Mercury Grey I think and the York 863 I did was in the Graphite Grey. They go well with lighter grey or silver surrounds:

Looks good, their used to be very close colours .
I did a rotel 230 better than new,a hygain 5 multimode and a York myself.

I would wet n dry outside and spray them in my bedroom . Yup mom n dad were well happy with me.
I even replicated the rough surface on one case with a anti stone chip spray for vehicle sills ,I think it was shultz product.
Dried off and coloured to finish.

Happy days.
Looking forward to a little prep and finish on this 240 , the case is scratched but facial plate with lettering is still very nice although edges are scratched
Will be worth the effort.

Looks close for sure, maybe a shade lighter but you can never tell just from pictures, plus it's gloss-lacquered whereas the Rotel and Cybernet Beta ranges were just done in a basecoat or were perhaps satin-lacquered.
It's another more recent colour that's readily available though, so that's good news.

I did spray the radio case and sides top of front pannel. The Ford g grey metal if was perfect.
If I would not have lacquered it I'm sure it would have been hard to tell.
The lacquer just raises the gloss.
However I'm very happy ,it now looks a very nice clean almost new radio if not a tad glossy but it will protect the finish for years to come.

Poundland Matt black was right for inside case too.

I had forgotten how hard it was to remove minor scratches, fill chips and generally do a good prep.
Happy days

Halfords do a satin finish clear lacquer off the shelf should you ever require one. Gloss can look a bit too shiny sometimes, although the finished item will perhaps be slightly harder-wearing.

Good job that man :) Glad you're pleased with the fruits of your labour.

Satin lacquer . I never even noticed satin.
Thanks for that , I don't think I will nib the surface and 're coat satin .it's actually grown on me.

Yes theirs a nice sense of satisfaction now in sitting using it looking at its beautiful condition ,taking that extra care using knobs without scratching Davis with nails and reinforces mindful not to place mic on top casing.
Sad really, I am by nature a perfectionist and take the best of care ott in fact with all my stuff.

Nice stick on 21x10mm rubber feet aid speeker projection and keep base clean from scratches.
