York 863 audio chip

Post by NightProwler »

Hey all, Quick question about audio chips. I got a York 863 here and the volume is quiet, It has to be almost all the way up to hear anything and also there is no out going audio. Could this be the audio chip or do I need to look elsewhere?

Cheers everyone...Rich

It may be because of the mic' issue. When you haven't got a mic' plugged into a Cybernet-based radio, the audio is very very low. If the mic' is faulty it might not make a circuit that brings the audio alive? Try another cybernet-type mic' in it.

I'm no expert on mic's or radio internals though so I may be talking out of my bottom ;)

Do audio chips act like this when they go 'bad' or is it a case of they either work or they dont, If that makes sense?

Could be a faulty electrolytic capacitor in the audio chain

Don't know . Never had a faulty one (yet :)) . You really need a scope so that you can do some measuring .

Here's a handy page for your bookmarks
http://www.m0ysu.com/CybernetRepairsPage-2017.html

Especially this part:
Replace audio IC (TA7205) which also sometimes affects outgoing modulation too. NB. If you rub your finger across the back of the
Audio IC with the volume up and it makes a sound chances are the IC is fine and the fault lies elsewhere. If its completely dead its
more than likely the Audio IC.

Ahhh Ive just tried that and it made no difference, I'll borrow an audio chip from another Cybernet radio and that should tell me. I dont really want to do that but at least I will know. Cheers Steve

Put your tongue on the power connector terminals as well to see if the 12V is present 😀

Look at the caps just behind the audio chip.
C105 tends to fail.
Also while you are in there check C78 just in front of the 455 filter as almost everyone i have seen lately has started leaking.

Just had a quick look and C102 appears to be leaking, The others look ok. I'll replace them and report back. Thanks for your help
