They're more expensive because you have them 'on prescription' from the opticians and unless you have a history of eye problems such as glaucoma in your family you have to pay for an eye test as well, if you do have family history then the test is free.

Jumping in late with this topic, I have good glasses, and magnifying glasses both at work and home bench. Eyes are knackered, due to welding flash.
I simply use a mobile phone, with camera and stuff it on zoom.
Works a treat, and a lovely clear image

I have multiple pairs of costly glasses but the ones I find best for fine work came from Poundland, Id like to get a few more.

Long been an annoyance to me, that has.
Then I remember that the optician's BMW doesn't run on fresh air.
Do I feel sorry for him?
Nah.

I have it from an inside source that the designer frames at the opticians actually only cost about £2.50 to them :(

I finally got around to buying one of THESE, after having a bit of a faff with swapping glasses around to work on and read numbers on an Intek 2800 that was on my bench.

It was "plug n play" with Linux (you do use Linux of course, don't you) requiring no drivers or owt, just in install the "Cheese" webcam software and away you go. Once I figured out that you have to hold the thing pretty close to what you are wishing to look at, it works really well and I'm sure it will enable me to start to enjoy doing this type of work again :)

Greed, nothing else.

The frames cost them about £2.50 and the lenses about £10 - anything else is just profit.
