Clean up old radio - advice ?

Post by gmham »

Guys what do you use to clean up your old radios ? Got an old 148gtldx here that the front faceplate and controls require a good clean, tried servisol but not overall impressed. Appreciate nothing will get the new look but be great to at least get all the general muck etc off if anyone could give me any tips ?

Clean the front and knobs in the sink with warm water washing up liquid and a soft nail brush.

That is how I do mine. Covers get done with Autoglym bumper care.

What Mudslinger said. A good soak in warm water with some washing up liquid will do the trick of softening up all the muck. Then you just need to get all the gunk out from the grooves in the control knobs taking care not to strip the orange indicator lines out in the process.

A cheap toothbrush is handy for getting into knob grooves and also for getting the crud/spittle/snot etc out of microphone grilles.

As suggested, soak for an hour in fairy liquid infused very warm water for an hour before gently scrubbing the scum away ;)

To get rid of cigarette/nicotine smells forget the above advice, you will need a flamethrower.

It's okay think there may well have been some traces off that on the faceplate itself !!

Only when she has finished with it mind you...

Cobra/Superstar knobs are worst for showing decades worth of cack I find. Snot, mud, dead skin, egg sandwiches, grease and general sh!tiness. It's the contrast between the bright shiny chrome and the filth and grime rammed deep into the grooves on the controls.

Some of it stinks to high hell too. As if someone's finger had gone through the loo roll while wiping after a particularly unfortunate bowel movement and then went straight back to the rig and egg sandwich without washing.

In fact I did own one of his old radio's up until a couple of years back. It was a very nice ICOM 706 MK1. I let it go in PX for a Yeasu FT847 Earthstation. I regretted letting the 706 go though, and recently replaced it with a MK2-G.

Yeap . Leave it all to soak in soapy water for an hour or so , then clean with a cloth . Saying that the face plate came off the last one I did :) And an old toothbrush to clean the knobs .
