Cobra 148GTL

Post by Mudslinger »

I have just managed to bag myself a mint and boxed 148GTL for a bargain price.

What mods can be done to these? I understand it is 40 channel mid band as standard. I don't want anything too drastic, but Hi band would be useful.

It is the Philippines version from 1990

Many Thanks.

Nick could PIC chip it as he did for Atomic's radio that's on the for sale board if that's the sort of thing you're after :)

I was thinking of keeping it basically standard but if it is capable of being made 80 channel easily enough like a Stalker.

Yep.
PIC chip with High band on the Tone switch and a 10khz on the Dim/Brite or if your not fussed with the NB/ANL etc you could have Mid / High / UK40 on the 3 way switch , and off course get the clarrifier unlocked.

That would mean him having to have FM mode fitted also. It would be good to have done, but muslinger says he wants to keep it as standard as possible.

As an aside, I've just bought a Superstar 360 which is the same radio as the 148 GTL but has 120 channels as standard coverage (low/mid/high bands).
Never, ever, ever....bloody anything ever!

Far too many radio's to list here. But I do own a legal one...

I think I will keep it standard apart from maybe adding the Hi band.

It is in nice original condition (Probably about 8.5/10) and I wouldn't want to spoil it. It was sold as untested, but as far as I can tell it works very well.

I have got a few Stalker/Madison crystal switch boards here and loads of original 11.4758 crystals [High band] but adding the crystal switch is not something i would recommend as you can only tune all three modes on one band the other band will always be slightly off to the other, as everyone will know its near impossible to have an exact matching crystals so all modes will be the same on both bands which is why a PIC would be much better or you could go the x2 4008 binary adder route, The clarifier on them can be easily unlocked and they have ample slide, From centre position they will do around plus and minus 6 to 7kc so will drop onto the zeros no problem.

Cheers Nick, I have a few radios coming this way soon, so it is likely to end up with you if I decide to mod it.:)

Hi Simon . I saw that radio , and to be honest I thought it would fetch more . So you got a good deal . Funnily enough I just bought a NOS Taiwan one a few weeks ago in Spain . I fitted a pic to my existing 148 GTL a while back , and I've just bought another pic from Nick for this one . It adds the HI band , and the +10khz , which is really all you need .

Cheers Sammy. Not decided whether I will keep it or not yet but if I do keep it for a while I'll get it done.

The advert wasn't the best maybe that's why it was cheap.
