I know what you mean, some manufacturers make a really crap job of designing things don't they?
Either way too bright or way too dark, and it doesn't seem to occur to them to make the brightness adjustable.
Heaven knows what kind of environment they test them in.
'Acrylic' and 'perspex' are suitable words to search for, but the description of anything like that is never going to be good enough to tell whether it will suit your purposes, as it is unlikely retailers will have bothered to provide example photos of usage.

I bought some of this

100mm x 100mm Neutral Grey, which cost £2.75

Just cut to size with junior hacksaw and smooth up the edges.

That is not such a daft idea!
I have recently changed the display in my 847 to green.

I'm about to change a couple of my radios over to blue LEDs and have went for 1mm thick clear perspex and translucent blue acetate to sit in front of it.

Nothing ventured etc....

I have used 0.45mm acetate [red] a few times, Its ok sat behind a bezel for smaller LED displays but for larger areas it may not be sturdy enough [It is quite flexible], So as above placing it over 1mm clear should do the trick as long as it is behind the bezel and not on the front..

I bought 3 different shades of thin blue film for the Amstrad I tarted up a while back as I was originally going to change the channel indicator LEDs. I then had a change of heart and stuck with the red. I'm not sure if a layer of blue would soften the brightness a bit but it was similar to the above green stuff.

If I didn't throw it out and I can find it tomorrow in the loft you can have it.

The stuff I posted a link to will do what you want, the only consideration is that it is 3mm thick, so may be too thick for what you want it for?

On one of my older tarted-up radios, I used clear perspex that'd had a couple of coats of window tinting spray flashed over it until it had the desired effect. It hid the digits "board" when turned off but allowed the light to shine through when on. I got the spray from poundland and the clear window was from an old rig.
