Cobra 2000 GTL Vintage Lights Enhancement!

Post by BulldogUnit777 »

I like to keep the meter lights on the Cobra 2000 GTL a vintage look. By using gold foil adhesive material the reflective lighting enhances the meters on the radio! Very cheap and effective way to make the most out of bulbs shining, Bulldog.

That's a great medium term fix, but ultimately the foil is going to break down and discolour (discolor) and lose its shine pretty quickly.

Personally I would polish the metal with a cleaning compound, Brasso® etc, Alexs' dremel with a polishing head on is a very useful tool for this.

Yes with age it may or may not break down. When that point comes I will spray paint the color!

Or just put in some warm White LEDs. Give you the same yellow tinge.

You can't taint a classic radio like this with LEDs!! Who do you think you are....Ashtec? :-P

I have wondered i keep reading that LED's can cause interference?

Though that said most radios had a Tx or Rx or both lights to begin with

Something like an Ar144 or stf9dx must be rife with interference then

Its odd though i had an LED in a radio i scrapped and that meter hurt my eyes it was just too intense

But LED's in base station meters if set at the right angle look much better.

My Cobra 146 has a bulb but its nice and bright so if its not broke dont fix it,that said the radio is Broke

Why not swap the Mona Lisa out for an HD re-print......its better right?

send it to Alex....he likes Dremels. Job done

....all I am saying is that this is a classic, MINT radio. In the spirit of keeping everything "as it should be", I personally wouldnt use LEDs.

Thought I concede, they'd give a better light, but it's just not authentic.

It has extra channels too. I just like the light they give. Authenticity don't really float my boat. I like to make them my own. Interference normally comes from the really really cheap ones from china. I get all mine from a well know uk seller and never a moments bother.

I respect ya braw...... chill! haha

I guess I've been LED-scarred when I got my Kenwood TS570 back off Ashtec and he'd installed GREEN LEDs in the back of the LCD..... urgh. LOL

It'd be a dull old world if we all liked the same things though wouldn't it ?

I like white LEDs in place of yellow pi$$ coloured lamps anyday. And if you're going to sit enjoying a radio for hours and hours... it may as well look good to your eyes anyway... the other end don't know what your radio looks like. (or care I would guess) ;)

I see some light the reqular bulbs and others led. The way I look at it, it's your radio. Fun to customize. Nice to do some yourself. I buy my bulbs from Radio Shack. These are the mini lamp #272-1141, 12 volts - 25mA with 1-3/4 hook up leads.
