Yaesu 817 IF tap mod for panadapter?

Post by sickboy »

I don't know why but I fancy having a panadapter display for my 817.
I've read about it on a few different blogs, and some say to put put the IF signal through a small buffer board like this one https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DC-12V-10KHz ... 1438.l2649, but then others are saying just to tap it using a 100pf ceramic cap and a 150 ohm resistor in series. The idea being that you then connect the 68MHz signal to an SDR dongle to use as a cheap 'n' cheerful panadapter.
Has anyone here ever tried this that can offer any advice? Is the buffer board necessary?

I have tried it on my 857 and was just pure overload.....So yes Buffer board would be recommended

I use my FT950 and the panadapter direct to the output IF for the DMU. With the tuner on the 40m long Di-pole its great.

Thanks for that. I'll order the buffer board, but knowing me, by the time it comes from China I'll have a different radio :)

I ordered a couple of these just before Christmas and they just recently arrived. I had a similar project in mind. The construction and quality look pretty good with the caveat that I have not tested them yet and they are from China.
