Best vfm 2m multimode rig?
Hi,
Looking for a decent 2m multimode rig for use at home.
Don't want an Icom 706, had one and didn't like the menus.
Ideally looking for a midi-sized home QTH rig and just seeking some views and opinions at this stage.
Thanks
Alistair

Alistair, if you want something compact keep an eye out for the Kenwood Trio TR9130 or the TR751E, however if you want something desktop-size try for an Icom IC275, also consider a decent transverter like the Khune 28MHz-144MHz type.
Old rigs but will out perform many of the modern shack in the box setups.
Best
Rob.

Look for an Icom IC-245. Stoneold but mine is working perfectly. Or a Kenwood TR-9000. Bottom line all of the old ones are working fine. More ore less all are missing These fancy stupid menus

TR9000 doesn't have CTCSS for opening repeaters, although it does have tone burst. The TR-751s don't usually have CTCSS but it was an expensive option.

Re: Best vfm 2m multimode rig?
I have been looking at the Yeasu Ft726 and / or Ft736 rigs.
Not sure what the difference is between them but eHam.net reads ok.
Any opinions?
Thanks

FT726 is old, the FT736 is not as old but a good all rounder and performer - more so if it has the Mutek front-end fitted.
What VHF activity are you planning on doing e.g. SSB, Meteor Scatter etc?

Someone recommended an Icom 271e(?) if can be found at less than £200.
I was looking to do SSB and see how things went, nothing too fancy at this stage.
Thanks

Second the TR-9130. Basic but excellent.

I have an FT-480R and a TR-751E neither have CTCSS but with no repeaters around me anymore no CTCSS is not really a problem for me.
Both of them perform very well but are very rarely used and i will more than likely be shifting them on soon.

Kenwood/Trio TS711E for a Homebase 2m multi mode. Kenwood TS751E Yaesu FT 480R - if you can find or afford one the Icom IC 275H. Lovely nostalgia thread by the way. Only one I never used was the classic Icom.
