Yeasu FT 101ZD 11m Mod
Hi there
I have a FT 101 ZD and wish to install 11m band. I have found a mod for the FT 101 series and understand it (changing the crystals). The question I cannot get answered is if this mod will work on the ZD version. If anyone could advise me I would be most grateful.
Thanks William.

Re: Yeasu FT 101ZD 11m Mod
FT101ZD and other later radios) for 27.000 to 27.500 MHz use a 41.4875khz crystal and 27.500 to 28.000 MHz use a 41.9875khz crystal. Using the 10m A,B,C,D bits move the A & B crystals to C & D (keep C & D) and then put the new 11m crystals in A & B - giving 27MHz to 29MHz.
(you could do all 4 A,B,C,D and use these two extra crystals to go lower)
For 26.0-26.5 = 40.4875 MHz
For 26.5-27.0 = 40.9875 MHz
You are meant to do some alignment but most people find it will tune there without much ado.
Not 100% sure if all are the same and some radios (not sure if a ZD range) had an 11m position on the band-switch already (I think RX only from memory - you had to cut a brown wire to TX???) so if you have 11m or AUX you could put one crystal in there to cover the part you want.

Re: Yeasu FT 101ZD 11m Mod
easy to do..
if your not licenced for 10mtrs and wish to lose it all then yes get four crystals, but i always just do two crystals..
*just deleted whats already been wrote above *
get it done, you will get just below 27.000mhz to around 26.900 and just over on the dial..
you won't need to do any alignments..

As you are going to use an old hydrid rig, you had better get the manual so as to learn how to tune the PAs.
Even if the voices on my head aren't real, they do have some pretty good ideas

Re: Yeasu FT 101ZD 11m Mod
This is the guide I had that answers that question well :-)
• After a 15 minute warm-up, and Idle Current set to 60 ma.
• Select the band and general operating frequency to be used.
• Place the Meter switch in the Power Out (PO) position.
• Rotate the "PRE-SELECTOR" for maximum receiver noise/signal output.
• Place the "CARRIER" control to position 4 and "MIC" control to minimum.
• Momentarily engage the MOX transmitter control for a maximum of 10 seconds.
• Adjust the "PRE-SELECTOR", "TUNE", and "PLATE" controls for maximum meter deflection.
• Disengage the MOX transmitter control and let the rig cool for a few seconds.
• Increase the "CARRIER" control two units and repeat.
Adjust "CARRIER", "MIC", and "PROCESS" controls for the proper output as desired.
Monitor the Meter for grid current (Ic) and ALC levels to ensure that you are not over-driving the transmitter.
Both will greatly shorten tube life, cause distorted transmitted audio, and is the prime source of television interference.
HTH
OH and one important note - don't tune up on 27555 before a call or over the person you want to work whilst they are still in the QSO. It is considered very bad manners ... And nothing pisses people off more than a "tune up" in the middle of a QSO with a weakish DX station by some bellend who is going to shout them the moment you finish. +/- 10KHz from the target frequency is fine.
And NO that is not just restricted to 11m ... you hear it on bands where people *should* know better!

Re: Yeasu FT 101ZD 11m Mod
NO NO NO NO and again NO........place the Meter switch in the Power Out (PO) position.
The meter has to be in the "IC" position the PRESELECT for maximum rise and the PLATE turned for maximum DIP. If the sides of the "dip" are unequal, then the vales need balancing.
All initial tuning must be done in the IC position. The LOAD can be use for maximum smoke using the PO as it matches the impedance from the PAs to the ATU or antenna.

Re: Yeasu FT 101ZD 11m Mod
These were the notes that came with mine.
Put the Meter switch into the 'IC' position with the CARRIER and MIC control fully counter-clockwise. Throw the MOX switch to engage the transmitter and read the meter that is now displaying the idling current.
The current should read 60ma on the scale. If it does not, adjust the BIAS control until 60ma is obtained. Move the Meter switch to ALC and ensure a full meter deflection to the right. Adjust the ALC control as needed. Return the MOX switch to normal PTT. Then the list (above) peaking as you go for maximum smoke.
*** There are differing guides in various formats around the 'net and not all models it appears are the same when it comes to tuning up. The early 101s peaked PO whilst dipping the grid current later versions you just peaked for power :-)
As the notes in the box of mine came from the FT club I *do* tend to believe them ... but I am not saying anyone else is wrong :-)

Re: Yeasu FT 101ZD 11m Mod
If this mod is being done to run it on FM then dont run it at 100 watts as the valve's dont like doing the ton for long n this mode also the old 101zds do sound very well on FM with a cheap palmer fist mic.

The old ft101zd along with the ft707, very popular with the 11mtr / 45mtr gang way back in the 80's !!!

Re: Yeasu FT 101ZD 11m Mod
Back in the mid eighties, I picked up a FT-707 that had part of the 11m band instead of 10m. The crystals were arranged so that it covered 27-29Mhz. The original crystals were in a bag taped to the inside of the radio.gmham wrote:The old ft101zd along with the ft707, very popular with the 11mtr / 45mtr gang way back in the 80's !!!
Nice radio for its day. Performance was pretty good but its receiver tended to be overloaded on the crowdy 40/80m.
