So its just like it used to be here, where every full licenced G simply walked in off the street one day out of curiosity/boredom and took the test with zero training or revision and passed first go?

The US exams are held at 1pm on Sunday 11th October at the RSGB Convention according to the September RadCom. It says you can just turn up, but recommends advanced booking as there are limited papers.

Hi Scott,
From the reading I've done, there is no practical at any level. The ARRL books I've got tell you a fair amount about the exams and the ARRL website has a list of "things to bring" (
http://www.arrl.org/what-to-bring-to-an-exam-session). In the US, you can just turn up to an exam session unannounced as they are all listed on the website so I would imagine you need to do very little before the exam. They are the same sort of style exams as the UK version except the question pool is public. Pass mark is 75%.
Yes, I was planning on doing both exams on the same day, but will be guided by however they are doing it. Hopefully see you there then!

I know it is cutting it a bit fine but I will have to put down the bottles of stella and revise my head off next few weeks.

I agree with the suggestion above about taking the practice tests on QRZ.
You get to work with the actual question pool used in the test itself.
If you familiarize yourself with the US frequency limits and such, you probably have enough knowledge already to whiz through tech and general, and possibly the extra as well.

You're allowed to see the full question bank for the US exams. A friend of mine who was GW1VTJ moved stateside and took his Technician with his then YL. They had 30 mins with a copy of all available 99 questions and answers, there were 66 questions in the test and the pass mark was 35!! As an ARRL member I was thinking of registering as a VETO do UK based exams.
