Things may have changed since I got my mine years ago. I did my learning and exam over a full weekend, the only practical things I had do was to give a radio report to another operator and do a short morse exercise using a crib sheet and that was it. Other members on here who are more in touch with the courses will be able to advise further.

I'm studying for my Foundation at the moment. I don't think there is a time frame as such, you just take as long as you need with it until you feel ready to sit the exam. I would advise joining your local amateur radio club as you'll need to be a member of a club to sit the exam, which they will organise. The club will also help you to train.
There are 26 multiple choice questions in the Foundation exam.
I would also recommend joining HamTests which allows you to study and take mock exams online.
This is free to join.

About 6 weeks from the very start of the course, to the day of the exam, roughly.

26 questions. Small practical prior to the exam, does not count towards exam pass %.

I'm led to believe that some clubs do it over a weekend ( Saturday and Sunday all day and then the test at the end of Sunday ) whilst others do it over several weeks , couple of hours 1 night a week at the clubs qth . If you don't already have it I would suggest that you buy the Foundation licence book from the likes of http://www.rsgbshop.org/acatalog/Online ... ng_19.html

It's about 12 - 18 hours plus practicals.

That sounds about right... did mine over a weekend. Two short days - and to be honest, they struggled to fill those. Heavens knows how some pad it out to 6+ weeks!

It really is very easy and is designed so that anyone, even children, can get into the hobby. You're not supposed to need to be a member of any club, although I have heard that some insist. You should have plenty of choice in London though.

The RSGB site has a list of all clubs offering courses / exams along with contact details.

Good luck!

Buy the Foundation Book http://www.rsgbshop.org/acatalog/Online ... ng_19.html and read it cover to cover 2 or 3 times (its not very big) and try and find a weekend course . If you read that book a few times you will have NO problem passing ! Best of luck !
Its nice to be important but its more important to be nice......
