Re: Looking at becoming a licensed Radio Ham
Do you not know anyone in the building trade Brunlea like a roofer or someone who is not scared of height's.You could always assemble what need's to go "up" and you could give them the instruction's out the sky/roof light, just a thought as I have done a few install's for people who couldn't do it.I am sure someone at the club you do JOIN can help you out, bide your time and you will be fine

I do know people but it's the height that's the issue and they don't have the correct equipment to be safe on the roof.

Ok,it was worth a try, have done a few dodgy antenna install's with vertical antenna that were already built, even although I have been doing the roofing since the mid '80's,it is still a good feeling to be on solid ground again and the swr is low, hope you get it sorted soon

Re: Looking at becoming a licensed Radio Ham
Just to add that i've got in touch with Handley again and i'm hoping to have a visit for a quote. They did a cracking job last time at my old place and Vicky from there who answered my queries is very helpful so i'd rather stick with them.
All I need doing at this time is the cable replacing on my Diamond D-777 with the new stuff I have (And to have one PL-259 fitted to that cable as the other end has one on), and a discone fitting on the roof with some decent low loss cable (20 metres) and two PL-259's fitted. Can't be much of a fuss for them.

What a good do.
If you fit the PL-259 properly then they wont have to do it & possibly mess it up, then they just fit that end, leaving the other end to poke through the wall into your shack.
I'd also ensure that they wrap the connections in self amalgamating tape - get some just in case they turn up without it.
To replace a coax, I'd not be looking at a lot of money though, let us know what they are quoting.
I usually just climb out a velux window to my roff, although not in this weather.

Brunlea, if you are looking at getting your license, why not get them to put up a nice co linear antenna for the 2m/70cm amateur bands whilst they are up there?

Handley can't do it. They say they would need scaffolding to do it legally. I'm tempted to get a bungalow

Re: Looking at becoming a licensed Radio Ham
What sort of house is it?
3 floor terrace on Todmorden road sort of house? lol
Who put it up in the first place?
perhaps you just need someone that has a long ladder.
A roofer may be the best person as they have no fear up there, just instruct them what to do.

Re: Looking at becoming a licensed Radio Ham
It's a 3 floor end terrace. Burnley Aerials fitted the current one but he admitted not knowing about these types of aerials as he does TV aerials. I'll contact him again in the New Year as he might have just simply forgot to be fair.Mattylad wrote:What sort of house is it?

Got any good examples of aerials? I'll have to get one a little later down the line until my bank recovers from Christmas!FakeJake wrote:Brunlea, if you are looking at getting your license, why not get them to put up a nice co linear antenna for the 2m/70cm amateur bands whilst they are up there?

Re: Looking at becoming a licensed Radio Ham
Hi Brunlea
A decentish dualband base (2m/70cm) antenna is a X30 or X50.
Maybe consider a tribander antenna (6m/2m/70cm) like a V-2000, if wanting 6m band in the future.
You can get a beam that's dualband and pretty small too, would need a rotator though.
P.S Hi Matty, it's Chewy.. passed Foundation on the 22nd, just waiting for Ofcom now to do their bit

Re: Looking at becoming a licensed Radio Ham
What chrisdx said, the x50 is quite good, some gain and not too big. Obviously if you want more gain, you can go bigger, the x300 is another popular choice but quite a bit taller than the x50.

that's the one and free N-type to SO239 plug..
might get one a couple of pound cheaper but might not come with the adapter plug
