Hello all.
My name is Mark. I live in canvey island Essex.
Recently been introduced to radio scanning by a colleague who listens into to air traffic at Southend airport.
So intrigued that I now want to purchase a scanner 2nd hand. Will be purchasing a car aerial and extendable aerial instead of the stubby so I can pick up more.
My main aim due to living next to the Thames estuary is to listen to the marine traffic. Overhead aircraft. Also the local airport. I would also like to pick up military if I can.
This is where I get a bit confused. My colleague has the uniden usc230. I have been researching and would like a scanner handheld capable of the above mentioned.
As far as I can tell the ubc125 is capable of 25-960 scanning
The ubc92 is capable of 25-960.
The usc230 is capable of 25-1300mhz. Would I be right in thinking I'm better off with the usc230 as it is covering more of a range therefore would be picking up more..especially interested in the marine and military traffic but not sure what unit to buy.
Sorry if I've banged on a lot. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time

Welcome Mark. If you enjoy listening to Air and Marine, then I find it a much better experience when I can track the things I am listening to.
for Air traffic try https://www.flightradar24.com/
for Marine tarffic try https://www.marinetraffic.com/
Both are excellent. Just zoom in on your area of interest. They both have free versions off their apps too, . FR24 has a cool Augmented reality function, where you hold your camera up and scan the skies through the viewfinder, and it will pop up the ID/info of any aircraft that are in your field of vision. Its damn cool and damn slick! My son showed me! haha

All three will receive the three bands you mentioned, the 92 is getting a bit long in the tooth now, but is the simpler of the three to operate. The 125 and 230 have the advantage of being able to be programmed via a PC, a TM1 board member provides free to use software for the 125, and if you like it and want to send a couple of shillings his way then he will give it to a charity rather than buying beer with it.
