hey Phil glad to hear you are getting into ham radio .I still have a few cards from port of Larne somewhere at my fathers house from back in the early days of legal cb radio.It was quite normal down here during the sporadic e season to hear NI,the western isles and the Shetlands .
If your using 80m inter g can be relatively easy! (depending on antenna topography etc)
You could call into the bright eyed and bushy tails network on 3772 run by Geoff 2E0UKG for a nationwide network that he runs at 7am onwards during week days
hope to work your station myself on any band.
