Yup - you can attach it to a nice long metal pole, Nitro. The higher up it goes, the more you'll receive.

Use decent coax though.
RG58 will lose too much signal, especially at UHF.
I found that I was receiving things on my handheld antenna that I was not on the discone until I upgraded the coax.
So I passed this test that allows me to twiddle with knobs, push buttons & call my self an Advanced !!!!!!!

RG58 is fine for HF up to 30 MHz but the stuff you are looking at on ebay is much better for UHF, the only downside is the thickness of the cable, it's not very flexible and a bit of a pain to bring into the house unless you have some air vents with large holes that you can feed it in with.

I have used a reel of this stuff before: http://www.truck-king.co.uk/xcart/custo ... =36&page=1
it's got similar properties to RG213 but It's called Mini RG8/U and it's much thinner.

At the risk of scaring the horses, I've been using CT100 satellite cable on my scanner antennas for years. It's only a bit thicker than RG58, it's flexible and it has very low loss up to about 2GHz.
It's 75-ohm, but that soesn't make a jot of difference - the loss due to mismatch is only a fraction of a dB.:

RG58 : 7.6dB loss per 10m at 1000MHz
RG213: 2.6dB loss per 10m at 1000MHz
CT100: 1.8dB loss per 10m at 860Mz and 2.7cB at 1700MHz.
