Wanted radio for vhf marine band any thoughts please

As i live close to the wash ( norfolk / cambridgeshire border ) and there not much to listern to i am thinking of tring the marine band being next to all that water and ports in the wash , what would be the best type of radio and antenna i should go for i will be using them homebase as i am 73 and disabled mostly housebound ?.cheap as possable.

Well you have two basic options:

1) Go for a dedicated VHF marine transceiver. One can be obtained for a little over £100. See https://www.force4.co.uk/department/ele ... rder=price

Of course it goes without saying you should not transmit.

Most of these marine unit also support scanning and duplex channels, priority scan and watch.

2) Alternatively for a more traditional scanner that covers the marine VHF channels. The Uniden UBC125XLT will do this. It can be used as a base station scanner and driven from a PC will full virtual control with my free Scan125 Control Program. Although scanners do working in frequencies as opposed channels the UBC125XLT will tell you what marine channel you are listening to and you can skip up/down the channels. The scanner display will how for example CH2R 161.9000 (MHz). With Scan125 you get the ability to do all of this and enter CH26R when programming a memory bank instead of entering 161.9

There are also good desktop scanners that cover the VHF Marine some of which are possibly able to be controlled from a PC if that is what you would like to do.

A point to remember/take not of is that VHF is line of sight so buildings, hills, etc. can drastically affect your reception ability.

It will be fine. Little point in spending money on a newer one just for the sake of it being newer.

Absolutely agree. WARLOCK did not say he already had a scanner when he posted. Not a problem or criticism as follow-up post are perfectly valid and will be of help to others.

Taking this topic slightly to one side but comparing to Marine Channel XX vs Freq nnn.yyyy MHz where if your have a scanner that does not decode frequency to marine channel then a simple crib sheet will save you a load of money. Same goes for the MASSIVE confusion of the Air Band 8.33kHz drama that always seems to create new posts, resurrect previously answered/solved explanations.

I have a couple of old Seavoice 550 transceivers.

I got them at different times the first one I got still looks practically brand new and is in full working order with all its original accessories and mic.

The second Seavoice I got came from ebay years ago I got it for about a tenner as it didn't work but I manged to repair it and got it all working again.
