Taking handheld scanner on a flight (Edinburgh - London

Post by elliotg »

Hi
I was wondering if anyone has taken a scanner with them on a flight? I will have the scanner in my bag at all times with antenna and batteries off the radio. Will this cause problems going through security?

Many thanks

Can’t imagine so. I take my 897 with batteries to and fro from Spain. Just have to sent it separately like my laptop. I do get picked out quite often but happy with that, those guys have a tough job, some travellers just don’t get it!

I’ve took handheld radios on several flights, Europe and America and always in my hand luggage bag, never been questioned on it.
I would keep batteries in it and tuned to a ham frequency should you get asked about it.
Also if you have a ham license keep a copy of it in your bag.
Just helps should you get questioned.

When my band go abroad, somewhere will be a few radio packs for the guitars - which usually are NOT legit for countries outside europe, operating on EU frequencies rather than elsewhere, plus a few walkie talkies for general comms. In most transits, the guitar cases get looked at the packs pulled out and examined, and nobody has ever noticed the band issues, but the walkie talkies in the suitcases never even generate a comment - so I assume they're more common than we imagine.

no issues as i travel between Spain and UK with my Icom ID51 (inc batteries), Icom IC-7000 and MacBook Pro a couple times a year as hand luggage

just make sure that you take it all out for the x-ray
also have a copy of my license just in case but never ever asked for it

so you will be fine
