I live close to an airport, and the water, I find my standard X30 white stick is great for both as well as 2/70

Just put frequency and voila.
Ham radio antennas like x30 are not good because further from operating frequency more deaf antenna is.

They're still better than a ¼ wave though, only just - but mine has pretty good marine performance.

Warlock - ¼ wave GP = quarter wave ground plane vertical - 48cm vertical whip sitting on 3 or 4 similar length radials to simulate a ground plane - have a Google. Most marine users on land would use a marine band vertical folders dipole - but these can be pricey.

Have a look at these.http://procom.dk/products/58-s1-series

The other type is the ones used for the ham bands - that has a bit, of capability at marine band. http://www.nevadaradio.co.uk/amateur-ra ... amond-x-30

If your interest is mainly marine - a dipole as suggested above gives pretty good results, and will pick up VHF ham band quite well. They're not too good on UHF because of the balun they use which prevents good UHF performance, but if you aren't interested higher up - should be fine.

You could buy a marine antenna like so//

But as I said, I live about 10 miles from the Solent, many folk round here listen in to the Vessel traffic services, APRS and coastguard, those I know of in the clubs just use their 2m white stick (X30 ect) with no issues
