Yes I agree, chirp should work ok, used it on a Wouxun KG-UVD1P with no problems:

I use CHIRP on my 3-Rs and 5-Rs and it works just fine.

Have downloaded CHIRP but finding it very hard to understand am using a baofeng uv-5r radio and windows 7 home premium , service pack 1, i have tried 2 cables NO 1 = the one i got with the radio USB-5R , NO 2 = MAXON that come with a puxing 777 what ever i try all i keep getting when i try to connect the radio to computer is = fail connect with transceiver. ??? any thoughts please

If you don't have an older computer, then you need to download the older windows drivers for XP or Vista, then install these on your Windows machine. It will object because the one it has is newer (and doesn't work), make it install the old one, programme the radio and then get grumpy, because the next time you plug in the cable, windows will notice the old driver and put back the non-working one. This is normal and a real pain - but you do get quicker at doing the driver install after thirty or forty time.

:lol: I have a folder that contains the old driver for that very thing! Yes, a royal pain in the ass.
