Uniden 3600 XLT Questions & Help For Newbie.

Post by sas29uk »

Hi guys

I currently have a Uniden 3500 XLT and wondering if its worth the upgrade to the 3600 XLT ?

I have not been keeping up with newer models and such so i know almost anything to do with digital frequencies or who or what i could potentially pick up ?

I have read on a couple of threads from a couple of months ago that some users had problems with close call only picking up analogue is this true that close call will not pickup any digital ?

Will i pickup more on the 3600 compared to the 3500 ? I am trying to figure out if the extra £250 will be worth the spend so any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks.

First thing to find out if there is anything digital to listen to where you are..
Close Call will pick up STRONG digital signals but not Simplex DMR..

As ever, some good advice from Mike there. I'd say my Uniden 436 (v similar to the 3600) is a bit more sensitive than my 3500, but maybe no more than about 10%. It does seem to have better selectivity vs a 3500. Beyond the DMR decoding, I find the recording function and larger screen to be most helpful, plus the significantly increased capacity to store scan lists. Put another way, I rarely use my 3500 now.

Thanks for the info guys

I assume now there is some sort of DMR Frequency list or do the existing frequencies for example security firms use the same frequency just now in digital form or is it like starting off again trying to find new frequencies ?

Thanks.

Most firms that upgrade to DMR keep their existing frequency, scanner users find it is time to upgrade to a digital scanner when their local analogue shopwatch suddenly stats making BRRRRRRR BRRRR noises..

I would advise that you get an RTL SDR and look around for digital signals on that. You can then decode them with free software too and listen in to see if they are actually something interesting or just another boring courier service or taxi dispatch.

You can also check if they are encrypted. That way, if it turns out there is nothing unencrypted and interesting to listen to, you won't have wasted a couple of hundred pounds on a new scanner. The RTL SDRs only cost about £10.

Hi Radiosification

I had purchased the 3600XLT before your post but i am mobile quite often so i think it will come in useful as with the dongle i would have to have stayed at home and do not have a laptop. Hopefully it will be worth the money.

Not being funny but who are "They" ? I have searched high and low and asked everywhere I can think of about any changes or upgrades and can get very little info, Uniden will not even confirm who are their contacts are Europe... The US 436 model has just had some minor tweaks in a firmware upgrade, the 3600 is still sat on V1.00.

Mike its just what ive seen on usergroups etc when ive googled the model number but i am in the same boat as you i cant even register mine on the uniden website as it dont even recognise a 'UBCD3600XLT' but will recognise the 436/536.....as usual the UK is the 'poor relation' !!

I've got the BCD436HP and i'm pretty sure theres no update for that coming, and you're far more likely to get an update for that. There's just been a 'big' update for it which fixed a lot of stuff and improved sensitivity and even that was spread out over several BETA firmwares, but thats about it.

From experience, the European models very rarely get updated. They seem to concentrate on the US market, so if you hear of new features coming to the 436, then theres a chance the 3600 will get them too, seeing as the 3600 is identical in every way to the 436. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if you could flash the 436 firmware on a 3600, but then you'd lose DMR and have to buy it separately :(
