Loft mounted or exterior scanner ant ?

Post by gmham »

Guys looking to put up a dualband whitestick antenna for a bit off general vhf/uhf scanning rx work. looking for a bit off advice on the following - install the antenna in the attic on a short length off pole as per sample photo or install it on a short 4 foot pole above gutter height off the house ? attic area where I would be putting the antenna would be virtually right above the shack itself so would obviously require very little in the way off coax. the outside install although just slightly heigher is in the clear but would obviously require around 25 feet off coax to reach the shack. house is around ten years old would a loft mounted antenna work much difference on rx to the exterior one ?

In a pinch, in the loft will work 'ok' but for best results externally mounted and as high as possible always wins. No brainer really.

Yep thanks for that. Yep clear and higher the better appreciate that but just wondered how much attenuation would there be with the antenna in the attic? Will try get it up on the roof thou. Thanks.

Depending on the materials used in the roof structure, there would be a certain amount of attenuation. Whether the roof covering is slate or sheet metal panels and the type of insulation between the rafters, especially the aluminum foil covered rigid board type.

Best of luck.
