Thanks. Any idea when these will/have come into use?

Also is there any indication if approval to use these will be applied retrospectively for existing license holders: I've seen nothing from OFCOM (as if that will be a surprise to anyone: OFCOM...communicating...your having a laff my son)

It says here
https://www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/assets/ ... Band-2.pdf
Add channels to the Simple Site and Simple UK licences

5.2 We have identified the channels to be added to the Simple Site and Simple UK
licences. This change will require a variation of the licences for all licensees which
will be carried out in accordance with Section 169 of the Communications Act 2003.
This will require us to notify all licensees (of these licence types) of the variation and
allow time for licensees to make representation about the proposal.

5.3 We will update the licence schedule to include the additional channels and this will be
available to download via the online licensing portal once the notification period has
ended. We will advise licensees of the relevant date in the notice of variation.
It also says the new channels are limited to 2W ERP.

The 449MHz channels are existing Simple UK channels, the 4 channels at 458MHz will be the new ones.

Also there will be 6 pairs of channels for Simple Site :
Base frequencies (mobiles at +7 from 458.5125 to 458.775)
451.5125
451.525
451.5375
451.55
451.5625
451.775

What were OFCOM thinking, allocating channels in this area?
It's a model control band (25kHz channels between 458.5 to 459.5, so that includes 458.800 and 458.825), and Telemetry/Telecommand, and 458.825 is in use by Fixed Alarms.

Would it be better to pick 458.7875 or 458.8125 for these reasons?

I suspect that the historical awkward placement of minority services in a busy band is something OFCOM would like to see the back of, so sharing unprotected services frequencies encourages users to migrate. With models and UAVs now more frequently using the microwave bands quite successfully, this makes sense. There are more channels, smaller antennas and other advantages.

The current spec for this part of the spectrum says this:

Data telemetry (SRD)

These band are not exclusive to model control. They are shared with other users who are permitted to radiate higher power, so you must take care when selecting a channel for use in a particular locality.

458.500 - 459.500 MHz

Also allocated to Industrial telemetry and telecommand devices between 458.5 and 458.95 MHz, and to specialised telemetry between 458.95 and 459.1 MHz.

Transmitters shall not be used airborne.

I assume they've done their monitoring and found there's very little use, as 458-9MHz equipment is mainly obsolete by now, so they're trying to reclaim the spectrum.

I've got a fixed alarm around this way somewhere, chirping every minute on 458.825 though :) That's the channel that really seems odd to me, to share with Simple.

Like the car keys in the middle of the UHF ham band? Silly stuff really. Back in the 80s, we had a secret Cold War Government comms system that worked in that band, but was secret and if it was tested nobody was supposed to comment. The radio mags and the RSGB would get letters about strange voices on certain frequencies, but they were never published - not in the public interest, whereas today, the BBC were defending their Cliff Richard debacle - saying this was in the public interest. Daft.
