I might be wrong, but if you set your step to 6.25Khz and program in 446.0062, then due to the step size, it'll actually be 00625, but due to the Unidens display only showing four figures after the . it shows as 0062.
I've had the 446 channels programmed into my 800XLT and 3500XLT and even though they show as 0062, it picks up the transmission fine.
As for the hearing half a word then going quiet, you're either catching a transmission as it ends, or your squelch might be set a little too high. I usually set my squelch at 1

Yeah you just program it to 446.0062. When you have it on 6.25KHz steps it puts it on the right one, just doesn't show the last digit.

In many cases, receivers have no changes made to their bandwidth when you select narrow step sizes - my van radio is quite happy with PMR446 reception on 12.5KHz channels (it's smallest) It does mean two strong signals on adjacent channels mess each other up, but the precision 'suggested' by 5 and 6.25KHz channel steps is just an illusion. By rights, PMR446 should be quieter on a conventional receiver that picks up 25 and 12.5KHz signals, but the deviation on many of the cheaper-toy type radios is too high anyway, so makes little difference.
