If you are searching a VHF or UHF band using NFM you will sometimes find the squelch opening on odd non-signals, you can either lock these frequencies out or turn the squelch up.. fine, but you could be missing weak valid signals..
Most PMR VHF and UHF NFM radio systems use CTCSS signalling and to a much lesser extent DCS coding..
So another way to eliminate non-signals is to turn on the CTCSS Search feature:
FUNCT + 1
SQL = CTC
CTCSS = SRCH
ENTER
Now during a search the AR-DV1 will display "CTC", the search will be at the same speed and will only stop when it finds a signal with a valid CTCSS code - this code will also be shown in the display for the duration of the signal.
A search can also be carried out looking for DCS coded signals:
FUNCT + 1
SQL = DCS
DCS = SRCH
ENTER
CTCSS and DCS search also skips MPT1327 trunking traffic that does not contain CTCSS or DCS signalling - useful if you are near a major UK airport.
To revert to NFM Carrier squelch search:
FUNCT + 1
SQL = OFF
ENTER

Another one is the bandwidth switch. Hit F and then hit MODE, this allows you to open or tighten the bandwidth. 200K for BBC Radio 4, 15K for FM CB / HAM & Business Radios etc..

Here's one... Pressing the PASS button when scan stops will add that memory/preset to the ignore mode and will exclude it from the scan! Helps to keep useful frequencies in memory (like MPT1327 control channels) but ignore them when scanning.
